Getting to know our Metropolitan Stylists is so much fun. Our December salon spotlight is Heidi Booth! Here is her interview...

Q. What was the inspiration to go into the beauty industry? A. After attending college for a year I knew I wanted to do something creative and hands on. I thought about my first experience in a salon, the excitement of a new style, the smell of the products and how my hair felt. That was inspiring!

Q. How long have you been doing hair? A. I enrolled in hair school in 1996 and have been working ever since. After all these years I still love doing hair and that's what keeps me going.

Q. Do you do hair only or do you also do make-up or any other services? A. I decided early on that color and cutting was where I felt most inspired.

Q. Give me some of your favorite products that you use and recommend to clients. A. I love the product anti-gravity from Kevin Murphy. KM ANTI.GRAVITY.SPRAY It's a great oil free volumiser that adds structure to your hair. I use it on almost all my clients. Kevin Murphy BodyGuard hydrating lotion it great for our dry Utah climate. Q. "Must haves" for styling-what would they be? A. A good brush and blow dryer.

Q. What is one of your favorite things about doing hair? A. One of the coolest things I every did was going to the NY Bumble & Bumble University. I learned to use the straight razor and other cutting techniques. I use what I learned there in almost every hair cut. The right education can be amazing. I love giving my clients a cut that is modern, weightless and seamless. I want to give my clients the best experience and for them to go home loving their hair. That is my job and the best part about doing hair.

Q. Current trends? A. Bangs are still a trend. It's the best way to change up your hair and add a lot of style. Bangs look great whether your hair is up or down.

Q. What inspired you to go into the beauty industry? A. I’m not sure that I would say I was inspired to go be a part of the hair industry in the beginning. It was more like I stumbled into the hair business. I learned to love doing hair and I now feel passionate about helping clients to find their best hair style.

Q. What beauty services do you provide besides doing hair? A. I do makeup. In my early days in the industry I worked for Lancome. I love teaching girls and women how to wear makeup that is both simple and natural.

Q. What are some of your must have styling products? A. My favorite products are Antigravity from Kevin Murphy and Plasticity from Brocato. I also can’t live without Fresh Hair from Kevin Murphy. Everyone needs a good dry shampoo.

Q. Is there a tip you can give us for enhancing someones own natural beauty? A. My tip for every woman is to take a few minutes to groom your eyebrows! Pluck them, wax them, dye them…just give them some attention! It can really make your eyes look incredible!

Q. What is one of your favorite cuts to give a client? A. I love a good razor cut. Doing a haircut with only my razor enables awesome movement. I’m also a firm believer in next day hair and think it’s a sin to wash hair everyday!

Q.What inspired you to go into the industry? A. I've been coloring my hair since 6th grade. I've always loved the different things that could be done with hair. I love art, and doing hair is like creating living works of art every day! I love it.

Q.How long have you been in the industry? A. As of last month I've been doing hair for 10 years!

Q.Give me your favorite products. A. Favorite products are Brocato -Actives, Kevin Murphy- Staying Alive and Pureology - Texture Twist. My favorite brand as far as tools is FHI. They are always up to date with current technology with their irons and blow dryers.

Q.What are your "must haves" for styling. A. Must haves for styling is a heat protectant like Brocato's Actives, and a good foundation product to start building up the style, such as Swell volume mouse gel by Brocato. Professional tools like a blow dryer and flat iron are also essential. Not only will they last longer than their cheaper counter parts. But they are much better on the hair.

Q.What is one of your favorite things about styling hair? A.I love how it's never the same day twice. People always want something different and it's so fun to be able to create that certain look for them!

Q.Do you offer a complete make-overs? Hair and Make-up? A. Along with hair, I also do makeup. I do regular makeup as well as special event makeup and special effects makeup such as cuts, bruises, aging, zombies, etc.

Q.Is there a tip or trick you can give me? A. A good tip for curling your hair at home (especially if you find your hair does not hold curl) is to make sure you let the curls properly cool before releasing. First use a heat protectant and hair spray on the section, then curl. Make sure to hold the curling iron in the hair long enough to heat the hair all the way through. Next clip the hair to the head and repeat all over. Let the curls cool fully then release. Run your hands through and PRESTO! Hollywood hair!

Q.A current trend? A. A current trend right now that I just love is Ombre or "melted" hair. This gives the illusion of naturally highlighted and grown-out hair. The look is darker and deeper and the roots and gradually lightens toward the ends. This can be done with a natural blonde, or even a dark brown fading to a bright red. It's very versatile.

Q.What is one of your favorite styles to give a client? A.One of my absolute favorite things to do is a total change. Going long and dark to short and blonde, going red for the first time etc. I love the excitement and anticipation for the finished look and I love that my clients trust me enough to let me make this change for them.

Q.What inspired you to go into the beauty industry? A. Well, I've been doing every ones hair since the 7th grade. On my own prom day I did two other girls hair as well! My hair was insane all of high school, I've been every color, white, black, red, pink, blue, purple, even a hideous yellow. I love the artistic feature of it. I feel like a true artist with every client and I can't get that outlet anywhere else! My inspiration though I owe to Crystal Mitchell, I looked up to her for years and she really pushed me to finally go to Cosmetology school! I still use a couple tricks she taught me. She is one of the most talented hair stylists I've ever met. Thank you Crystal!

Q. Where did you attend school? A. I went to Joseph Patrick which later became Envision School of Hair, Skin, and Nails. I graduated in 2007, but I like to say I've been doing hair for 5 years. I totally count school I was as busy there as I am now!

Q. Tell me some of your favorite products to use? A. I LOVE unique products. Probably my favorite product is Dust-it by Osis. It's a powder used to style men's hair instead of pomade, or used in women's to give volume (in place of backcombing/teasing/ratting) or to give a dirty, beachy feel. I absolutely love it. I also am a die hard fan of Cloud 9 Mousse by Brocato. It's a great product when I need "the works." It gives a little bit of everything, a little hold, texture, volume, helps smooth and get rid of flyaways all in one! Q.Give me a "must have" for styling? A. When I think of must-haves for styling, I immediately think of my jumbo bobby pins. They are huge and once I discovered them, they changed my life! I can do a french twist or a beehive with 1-2 bobby pins it's fantastic! I think everyone needs them to throw their hair up in a fun style anytime!

Q. What is a trick or tip for styling? A. Cowlicks! I LOVE them! Only because I know how to get rid of them! There are so many people who think that they can't have fringe/bangs or hair around their face, or have an opening towards their crown when their hair gets the slightest bit dirty because of dumb cowlicks! To get rid of them, while their wet, brush them left and right, left and right, while blow drying in the same direction you're brushing. The more you do it, the more it'll break the cowlick! Call me anytime if you'd like a demo and I'll get rid of your cowlick and change your life!

Q. Give me a current trend, whats hot right now?A. Extensions! Except, I don't know if this is a trend, or if it's here for life. My opinion, it's here for life! I personally have them and I'll think I'll have them forever. I can do 4 different types of extensions, but there is one that stands out above all! Tape-ins! They are so affordable and I can do a full head of them in 1 hour! You just can't beat that!

Q.What are some of your favorite things about your job?A. My favorite things to do with hair...gosh I could say everything! I love cutting, coloring, and styling. Honestly though, doing an intense dramatic color, or changing somebodies life with a one-of-a-kind cut, or teaching them how to style their hair like they never have before, are things that just make my life complete. I never get those feelings or emotions doing anything else and I can't get enough of it!

My other favs... I love to do make-up and extensions. Especially make-up though. It is definitely another way to express myself through art. I love to show a little bit of the clients personality through the make-up. It is just amazing.

Other Specialties...
I love doing hair and make-up for photo shoots or film. I recently did the hair and make-up for Coheed and Cambrias music video "Far." I am also currently working as the hair/make-up artist for the new TV shows, "Fresh Take," and "Audio Files."

Q.What inspired you to go into the industry? A. I love to help people feel even more beautiful! Q. How long have you been in the make up and hair industry? A. 6 years and I instruct at American Beauty Academy in Payson Utah.
Q. What is one of your favorite things about your profession? A. Styling is one of my favorite things to do. I love creating looks for conceptual photo shoots. I love doing entire styles with nothing more than a needle and thread. I have a few projects in the works you will have to stay tuned for:)

Q. Give us a tip for styling. A. The key to a beautiful style is all in the prep work...Slightly dirtied hair and a properly set curl.

Q. What are your must haves? A. The only products I need are a shaping hairspray and a non-silicone polisher, such as the Kevin Murphy "Easy Rider ".

One of our Senior stylists, Tricia, has expanded her services and is now offering Glitter Toes here at Metropolitan. We are so excited about them! They don't feel like acrylic, they feel like 3-4 coats of nail polish, and require no filing to get them off. They come in all sorts of great colors, like lavendar, onyx, and turquoise. She's also offering them for a steal! $25 to get them done, and they last 2-3 months! Much longer than regular nail polish, and worth every penny!
